How to Buy a Men’s Belt Choosing the correct men’s belt is easy.  Follow these simple rules, and you will always be in style.  First, match the belt with the shoe color you are wearing.  For example, wear a brown belt with a brown pair of shoes – never mix colors.  Second, if your pants have belt-loops then you need to wear a belt, or in the alternative a pair of suspenders.  For those you may be tempted, do not wear a belt AND suspenders – it just looks ridiculous.  Third, make sure you select the correct size and avoid punching additional holes in the belt to accommodate recent weight loss or gain. Men’s Belt Sizing Most men’s belts feature five holes spaced approximately one inch apart.  The middle hole represents the actual belt size measured in inches.  This allows for the belt to be adjusted two inches in either direction bridging between the next smaller or larger size.  Generally, you will want to start with a belt size larger than your waist size.  For example, if you wear a size 35 trouser you will want to choose a size 36 belt.

Caring for a Men's Belt

When it comes to caring for your belt it is always best to remove it from your trousers and hang the belt by the buckle if possible.  Leather tends to stretch and conform to the contour of your waist.  Thus, it is not uncommon for us to see belts become a little longer than when it was originally purchased or somewhat curved in nature.  When a belt begins to look tired (faded, discolored or has lost its shape), it is time to purchase a new one.  Slight scratches or abrasions may be camouflaged by using shoe polish.  To greatly extend the life of your belt, rotate wearing belts in your closet – in other words, don’t wear the same belt every day.
