To Cuff. . . or Not to Cuff. . .

That is the question. We are often asked whether a person should have his trousers cuffed or finished with a straight hem.

As a general rule of thumb, if the trousers are pleated, we suggest having the trousers finished with a cuff. Conversely, if the trousers are plain front, we suggest a straight hem.

Where did cuffs come from anyway? Back centruries ago, cuffs were developed so a man could walk through the muddy streets of the town without getting his trousers dirty. As streets became paved, there was no longer a practical use for the cuff other than looks.

Are there any real benefits to cuffs besides fashio? Not really. However, we find the added weight of the cuff itself helps the trouser to hang straighter giving it a nicer overall appearance. This is especially true with finer fabrics like super 100’s or 120’s wool.

The opposition to cuffs typically comes from their poor performance in holding their shape. However, we enhance the performance of the cuff by including an additional blind stitch ¾ of an inch from the bottom around the entire cuff. These cuffs simply do not “roll over” and you cannot tell the difference.
